Pot ‘O Gold Windsocks – A St. Paddy’s Day Craft for the Kids

It’s March.  What in the WORLD happened to January and February?  Despite the fact that this winter has been taking forever and the long, dark days seem interminable, I cannot believe the first two months of the year are gone.

Springtime is on its way, and the first hint of its arrival is St. Patrick’s Day!  Having spent a semester of law school studying in Dublin, I am a big fan of all things Irish (including a Guinness . . . once in awhile).  I am also a fan of keeping my kids occupied in that afternoon stretch after nap time and before dinner, so one afternoon I helped them make Pot ‘O Gold Windsocks to celebrate the upcoming holiday.

My preschooler was a little more excited about this project than my two-year old son.  He just wanted to collect all of the gold coins we were using and push them around in one of his trucks.  I guess he likes shiny things, just like his mama.

Anyway, this project is really easy for the kiddos and doesn’t require any fancy supplies.  Here’s what we used to make our windsocks: (1) small ice cream bowls (any paper bowl or tin can will work); (2) glue; (3) tape; (4) yarn or string for hanging; (5) multi-color tissue paper (streamers or ribbon will work, too); (6) St. Patrick’s Day stickers; (7) black and yellow construction paper; (8) plastic gold coins (I found ours at Joann Fabric and Crafts); and (9) optional = adhesive glue dots.

STEP ONE
To put them together, we first cut strips of black construction paper to fit around the perimeter of our ice cream bowls.  We then glued them to the bowls.  I decided to color around the top lip of the bowls with a black marker as well.  (Kindly ignore my busted up manicure in the photo.)
STEP TWO
Next we cut gold “coins” out of yellow construction paper.  I used a 2″ circle craft punch, but you could easily freehand these.  We glued three of these and three of our plastic gold coins to the inside of the bowl so that they peek over the top.  (Note: we later decided to use adhesive glue dots to affix the plastic gold coins to the inside of the bowls as the school glue didn’t hold them very well.)

STEP THREE
After our coins were sufficiently adhered, we cut two pieces of yarn, taped them to the inside of the bowl, and then knotted the two pieces at the top so that we could hang our windsocks once complete.

STEP FOUR
Next we cut our tissue paper into long strips, about 2″ wide.  We used a variety of colors to mimic the colors of the rainbow.  Once those were cut, we taped them to the bottom of our ice cream bowls.

STEP FIVE
Finally, we decorated our “pots” with shamrock stickers for a little festive touch!

Now that we have our St. Patrick’s Day craft complete, I need to brush up on my corned beef and cabbage cooking skills!
Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?  What’s your favorite way to celebrate (please tell me it’s by drinking a green beer!)?
