Hello there! Happy Monthly DIY Challenge day! For those of you who are new here, the Monthly DIY Challenge is when a group of awesome bloggers and I get together and create projects that center on a common product or theme. This month we’re all using cork to create unique projects that you can do, too! Each project is linked at the bottom of this post! But first, here’s a sneak peek!
Since entertaining season is right around the corner, I used cork to make cork napkin ring place cards. They’re a quick project that add a unique touch to any table!
Supplies Needed
You only need a few supplies to make cork napkin ring place cards, and of course, you can customize them with any color paint you like! Some of these links are affiliate links – to read my full disclosure policy, please click here!
- Wooden rings
- Cork scrapbook paper
- Hot glue gun & glue (high temperature)
- Spray paint or acrylic paint in any color
- Optional: Paint brush (if you used acrylic paint)
- Scissors
Start out by painting the wooden rings. I used spray paint to make this project as quick as possible. Painting the inside and outside of the rings was easier that way. Acrylic paint that’s brushed on would definitely work, too!
Once the rings have dried, cut the cork scrapbook paper into thin strips that are narrower than the width of the rings. This way part of the painted ring will remain visible.
Next, apply a layer of hot glue to the bottom of one of the strips. I applied it in a wavy pattern so that the cork would stick to as many parts of the wooden ring as possible. Quickly wrap the cork strip around the ring. Depending on the size of the ring you’re using, there may be excess cork. Simply bend the excess cork away from the ring and snip it off with scissors. Add a little extra hot glue to the end of the strip and press it into place. (Sorry I don’t have a photo of this step. My hands were covered in hot glue and I couldn’t do this and take a picture!)
Just a tip for when you put the place cards onto the napkin rings . . . since the cork is really thin, press the pin or thumbtack in at an angle. You obviously don’t want to poke into the wood, so going in at an angle will avoid that!
I think the best thing about these cork napkin ring place cards is that they eliminate having one more thing on the table. More space for food (or drinks)!
Now that you’ve seen how I used cork for the Monthly DIY Challenge, please pay a visit to my friends’ posts to see their creative cork projects!
